The assignment I am going to work on, is run on behalf of the company: DAF Trucks N.V. DAF Trucks is a technology company and a manufacturer of transport solutions. This year a new generation of trucks have been presented to the world. These New Generation trucks are called XF, XG and XG+. In these new high-tech, next level luxury trucks there are multiple digital screens, one for the dashboard and one for the infotainment system.
Client: DAF Trucks N.V.
Website of the Tool: www.dafdashboard.net
A feature that is particularly important for my own assignment was the dashboard screen. On the dashboard there are numerous options that can be customized to fit the driver’s needs. These options can be altered or set using the buttons on the steering wheel. But before the dashboard screen can be used, an emulator had to be created to teach drivers how to operate the buttons.
The assignment for my internship was to develop a tool that explains the New Generation trucks new dashboard system and controls to support trainings and presentations. The goal for the project was to build a simulator that the target group can use to interactively learn or teach the new dashboard screen without the truck being present.
With this information, I brainstormed and created several concepts to present to the DAF stakeholders. In the end, we decided on the "Customization Fits All" concept. Customization strengthens the bond between customer and product because the product is customized to the customer's personal needs. When the target audience opens the application, they are given multiple learning options: Free format, where they can freely explore and receive an explanation of the controls. With the Guided method, the user receives several lessons about the controls and must click on the correct controls during the lessons.
I have made several designs for the application and the different learning options. I start with sketching for a general idea of which items should be on a page, then I move on to wireframing in order to see how the pages should be built up and how the application as a whole can be navigated. Lastly, the design process is the actual design part. I made multiple iterations and presented them to the stakeholders and target group. In the end, we mutually agreed on a design and the development of the application could begin.
